Semana de la Programación de la Unión Europea

Del 6 al 21 de octubre de 2018 se celebra la Semana de la Programación de la Unión Europea, que es una iniciativa de base que tiene como objetivo acercar la programación y la alfabetización digital de una forma divertida e interesante, porque aprender a programar nos ayuda a darle sentido al mundo en constante cambio que nos rodea, a conocer mejor cómo funciona la tecnología y a desarrollar capacidades y competencias que nos permitan explorar ideas nuevas e innovar.

The European Commission launches the European Digital Skills Awards 2018

The European Commission wants to put the spotlight on projects which contribute to the development of digital skills in Europe. The Awards will be presented by Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society on 6 December 2018. The Awards are a great opportunity for nominees to showcase their projects, as the winners and four runners up in each category will be invited to exhibit their project at the ICT 2018 conference in Vienna as a reward. The final deadline for the submission of projects is 21 October 2018.

Winning projects will be selected in the following five categories:

• Digital skills for all – developing digital skills to enable all citizens to be active in our digital society.
• Digital skills for the labour force – developing digital skills for the digital economy, e.g. upskilling and reskilling workers, jobseekers; career advice and guidance.
• Digital skills for ICT professionals – developing high-level digital skills for ICT professionals in all industry sectors.
• Digital skills in education – transforming the teaching and learning of digital skills in a lifelong learning perspective, including the training of teachers.
• Digital skills for girls and women – taking actions to develop digital skills for women and girls.

The Digital Skills Shortage – A Current And Future Crisis

Digital skills just a few years ago were considered to be a niche skill set, only needed by coders and web developers. Today, they are increasingly important, even vital to the operation of most businesses in the UK and for almost every member of the workforce. But we are facing a critical shortage of digital skills, hampering productivity and global competitiveness.

A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), published in April this year questioned more than 1,400 businesses across the UK and found that 84% of firms think digital and IT skills are more important to their business than two years ago, with half (51%) saying these skills are significantly more important. The survey demonstrates the stark reality that the majority of businesses (75%) are facing a shortage of digital skills in their workforce, with 52% reporting a slight shortage, 21% significant and 3% a critical shortage.
