Personal Learning Environment

A Personal Learning Environment is the set of information sources and personal contacts (accessed through internet 2.0 tools) that provide updated information, activities and learning experiences.

PLE is a personal methodology for lifelong learning and for sharing acquired personal skills. It is represented by a diagram of the digital resources a person accesses to learn, illustrating the potential connections through a network in which nodes represent the learning resources and links establish the conceptual relationship between the resources.

Learners should focus their PLE on the area they want to learn about, identify good sources of information, whether they are resources or people, and set up tools to track and access information for effective learning on that topic.

From the initiative ikanos is considered the most appropriate tool for the permanent professional updating in digital skills because:

  • The network of learning resources is always growing.
  • PLE allows “learning to learn”.
  • It is a methodology for the development of competencies that addresses individual learning needs.
  • It allows access to knowledge not always structured and develop skills for a changing environmen
  • PLE is an invitation to reflect on where and how to learn.
